You Never Forget Your First Rottweiler
His name was Samson. When he was 9 months old he was surrendered by a family who could no longer keep him. I volunteered to pick him up and drive him two hours away to the Rottweiler Rescue of Los Angeles. I looked at his face through the rear view mirror. He had tears. I didn't know dogs could shed tears. At that moment I made a decision to rescue him myself. It was one of the best decisions of my life.
Samson gave us 9 wonderful years of friendship. We went everywhere together and he won over so many people who had negative views of Rottweilers. He inspired me to make the film, Black Beauty Breed. I was determined to make a film that told the story of this magnificent breed, highlighting their history as a working dog.
Samson was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 9 years old. It was a very difficult time for all of us. I tried desperately to save his life. One day he let me know it was time to let go. I will never forget that day. The photo above was taken right about that time.
I think about Samson everyday. Sometimes I think I see him. His leashes remain hung by the door. I am eternally grateful to have shared a part of my life with this incredible dog. Samson, you are always in our heart.
